In 2017, Children’s Theatre of Charlotte launched a unique endeavor, The Kindness Project.

The Kindness Project is an initiative from Children’s Theatre of Charlotte to develop and commission original plays for young audiences that are grounded in actively displaying kindness toward others. Hostility, it seems, is everywhere, yelling from our TV screens, drowning out others on our social media feeds and darkening many of our conversations. We want to help bring kindness front and center (stage) with a new multiyear endeavor.

It's centered around four world-premiere plays we commissioned: two in our 2018-19 season, Last Stop on Market Street and A Sick Day for Amos McGee; The Invisible Boy in our 2019-20 season; and Tropical Secrets: Holocaust Refugees in Cuba in our current season. We’ve invested in this project because we recognize the power simple acts of kindness hold. And we did this for one simple reason: to spread kindness wherever we can and to encourage children to act kindly toward others.

We’ve created a special bracelet that you and your family can request - for free - and wear as a reminder and a symbol to be kind, spread kindness and live kindly. That might mean bringing a neighbor’s newspaper to his or her door. It might mean volunteering in a classroom or paying for the coffee of the person in line behind you. Or, if you’re lucky like Amos the zookeeper, it might mean playing chess with an intelligent elephant.
