What is Drama for Healthy Living?
Research shows that using drama in schools is an effective method for transferring information to students in a way they can easily understand and remember. Children’s Theatre of Charlotte has the unique ability to use dramatic productions to grab and hold students’ attention and present situations where characters must choose how they deal with difficult social issues.
Through the Drama for Healthy Living Program, alcohol and substance abuse prevention is presented to all middle schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system. The goal of this important program is to create positive change in students at a critical point in their lives. During the season, we anticipate serving approximately 10,000 CMS students through the Drama for Healthy Living Program. We know from listening to countless students and teachers that this program reaches young people in a way a simple class discussion or lecture never could.
Alcohol and substance abuse continue to be tough issues for young people; behavior patterns formed at this age can have an impact on students for the rest of their lives – for good or bad.
This program is made possible through a grant provided by the Mecklenburg County ABC Board Community Health & Wellness Grant Program and is presented in partnership with The Dilworth Center.

Liars
Liars
Written by Dennis Foon
Directed by Mark Sutton
Recommended for ages 12 and older
Lenny and Jace are classmates. Despite apparently different personalities, they have one thing in common: they're both children of an alcoholic parent.
Children’s Theatre is excited to offer Liars, a play that addresses alcohol and substance abuse. Liars deals with the effects that a parent’s addiction to alcohol can have on a family and the strength and support that Lenny and Jace find in their discovery that they're not alone in their problems. The goal of the play, which supports North Carolina Essential Standards in Health Education for eighth-graders, is to give students information concerning alcohol and substance abuse to make healthy, informed, positive choices and choose effective ways to deal with peer and societal pressure.
